The Works of Umar Yarichev: Poetry of Memory, National Identity, and Dialogue of Cultures
Abstract and keywords
Abstract:
The article presents a comprehensive literary analysis of the work of Umar Denelbekovich Yarichev (1941–2020), an outstanding Chechen poet, People's Poet of the Chechen Republic, and a member of the Union of Writers of the USSR and Russia, in the context of the formation of poetics of memory, national identity, and intercultural dialogue. Based on a hermeneutic analysis of the poet's complete works (collections "The Source", "Meeting on the Way", "The Path of Memory", "Avalanche of Time", "Thoughts of Stone Towers"), archival materials and interviews with contemporaries, the key paradigms of his artistic world are revealed: firstly, memory as an active creative force, overcoming the trauma of historical disasters (1944 deportation, military conflicts) through a lyrical and epic understanding of the past; secondly, national identity as a dynamic category expressed in the image of a mountaineer thinker combining military prowess with philosophical reflection and ethical responsibility; thirdly, bilingualism (Russian as the language of creativity in modern times) preserving the deep-rooted connections with the Chechen cultural tradition) as a strategy of cultural dialogue, which allows to bring the Chechen historical experience into the space of the all-Russian and universal discourse. Special attention is paid to the symbolism of the stone tower as a metaphor for the inviolability of cultural memory and the continuity of generations, as well as the poetic reconstruction of the images of national heroes (Baisangur Benoevsky, Zelimkhan, Mansur) in historical and heroic poems. It has been established that Yarichev's work forms a unique type of "memorial poetry," in which the personal and the collective, the historical and the mythological, the national and the universal, are synthesized into a holistic artistic universe. The results of the study confirm the significance of Yarichev's poetry as a bridge between cultures and the contribution of Chechen literature to the formation of a multicultural space in Russian literature, highlighting its role in preserving cultural diversity in the face of global challenges.
