The article examines the main ways to prevent crime in places of detention. It is determined that correctional institutions ensure the order and conditions for the execution and serving of sentences in places of deprivation of liberty and guarantee the safety of society. Attention is focused on the fact that penal institutions should return a full-fledged personality to society. It is determined that the prevention of crime in places of deprivation of liberty, as part of all crime, should be carried out at three levels: general social, special criminological and individual. Preventive activities in places of detention may be based on methods of neutralizing criminogenic phenomena, destroying the criminal subculture, etc. It is proved that for the recurrence of crimes, there is a fact of prolongation of a person's stay in a criminogenic environment or his return after serving a sentence or parole.
