The paper addresses the synthesis of automatic control algorithms for an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in the event of a fiber-optic communication link failure between the aircraft and the external pilot station. An architecture of an automated safe flight termination system is proposed, which operates continuously within the onboard autopilot and combines a robust LQR controller for stabilization with an adaptive MRAC loop compensating for the step-like change of mass and inertia caused by the emergency release of the fiber-optic cable spool. An algorithm for detecting link failure based on the integral optical signal power is formulated. Mathematical simulation of the UAV longitudinal motion in MATLAB/Simulink confirms the efficiency of the combined control law. A compact economic model of the system effect is also proposed, expressed as the reduction of expected losses caused by emergency flight termination, which improves the economic feasibility of operating UAVs with a fiber-optic link for monitoring extended infrastructure objects.
