The article examines the potential use of blockchain technologies in emerging payment and settlement contours supporting the foreign economic activity of Russian companies. The study identifies the institutional, currency-liquidity and technological conditions under which digital instruments can reduce the total cost of executing a foreign-trade transaction and strengthen payment resilience. The functions of SPFS, CIPS, the digital ruble, digital rights and cryptoassets are distinguished in order to separate the technological layer of a settlement mechanism from the economic conditions of its actual use. The paper proposes a definition of a cross-border digital payment and settlement contour, a full transaction-cost model and an Applied Contour Readiness Index based on legal certainty, liquidity, compliance, interoperability, network reach and integration with trade data. The calculations rank national-currency banking first (66.7 points out of 100), followed by cryptoassets (50.0), regulated digital rights (33.3) and potential cross-border use of the digital ruble (25.0).
