The Role of Student Initiatives in Promoting Sustainable Development in the University Environment
Abstract and keywords
Abstract:
Student initiatives are increasingly acting as a catalyst for the environmental and social transformation of the university environment, turning the principles of sustainable development from declarative statements into living practices of everyday life on campus. This article analyzes the role of student communities, from eco-clubs and volunteer associations to academic clubs and activist groups, in shaping a green culture, promoting responsible consumption, implementing waste separation systems, organizing educational events, and influencing university management decisions. Special attention is paid to the pedagogical potential of such activities: through participation in initiatives, students develop sustainable development competencies, such as systemic thinking, civic responsibility, leadership, interdisciplinary cooperation, and the ability to take collective action. Based on an analysis of Russian and international cases (including projects under the Priority 2030 program), it is shown that university administration support for student self-organization is a key condition for transitioning from fragmented actions to a systematic sustainable development policy.
