Transition to the PD-8 in the Superjet Program: Economic Consequences for Operation and Deliveries
Abstract and keywords
Abstract:
The article examines the economic consequences of the transition from the SaM146 engine to the PD-8 in relation to two interconnected components of the Superjet program: the operation of the existing SSJ100 fleet and the deliveries of the new SJ-100 aircraft. The relevance of the topic is determined by the fact that, after the partial cessation of spare parts supply, technical support, and repair services for the SaM146, the task of maintaining the airworthiness of the existing fleet became dependent on the expansion of the Russian Federation’s domestic engine repair capabilities, while the market entry of the SJ-100 became tied to the certification timeline of the PD-8 and the deployment of its serial production. The purpose of the study is to assess the economic consequences for the state associated with the transition of the existing fleet to new engines and with the deliveries of a completely new aircraft. The paper treats the shift from SaM146 to PD-8 as an economic process consisting of two parts: one related to sustaining the current fleet and the other to the commercial launch of a platform equipped with new engines. In the short term, the transition is accompanied by higher costs of maintaining the existing fleet, a greater role of downtime and repair, and the postponement of part of the revenue from new deliveries due to shifts in certification timelines. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that the transition from one engine to another is analyzed not as a single technical replacement, but as a change in the economic structure of the Superjet program as a whole. The practical significance of the study is associated with the possibility of using the proposed approach in the future when assessing decisions on sustaining SSJ100 operation and organizing SJ-100 deliveries.
